100,000 Rolling in The Tide

In the South we like to think we do everything bigger and better, from food to sports, to trucks and tailgates. This past weekend I had the opportunity to go to the LSU v. Alabama football game, where over 100,000 gathered to worship their football teams. One thing is for sure is that if you are not from the south then you would not understand how serious Southerners take their football. It becomes a weekly routine like going to church or a weekly meeting; one just does not miss it.
I have been to football games all around the country but have to admit the atmosphere and passion at Alabama’s stadium Saturday night was unbelievable. It is hard to believe that people will take 4 hours out of their day and pay $150 a ticket to go watch college students play football but it happens every Saturday night across the South. I think why so many gather to watch the game (guys in specific) is because they can subconsciously picture themselves out on the field playing for their team. This is why the fans scream and shout with such passion.
It brought me to the conclusion that this is what many TCU fans lack… Passion. The attendance at TCU football games has had its highs and lows but this year more lows. Even though our team is not living up to its expectations does that mean we just give up on them and not show up? Students and Alumni want a big time football program that wins week in and week out, which is understandable. They also need to understand the crowd plays a huge role in that. It helps bring in recruits and creates an atmosphere that encourages the TCU players and makes it hard for the away team. So if we want to become a Southern football powers house then the fans need to realize it really starts with them.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your take on tailgating. It's true that TCU fans lack passion, which is what truly drives the SEC conference schools to their record breaking attendance numbers. I hope TCU can assess the situation and make the necessary changes so that game days can improve!

  2. I definitely think that TCU fans need to stick by our football team no matter what. It is so annoying to go to games with the stadium completely empty. You make the Alabama game sound super fun and exciting!

  3. I totally agree. I've never been to an Alabama game but I am from Austin and have been to a few UT games and the atmosphere is definitely completely different from TCU. I really hope we can improve this for next year!

  5. I totally agree with you. I love football, especially TCU football, and I hate that we don't have a more committed fan base like at some other schools in the SEC.

  6. Southerners definitely take football very seriously! I think fans should always be supportive of their teams, even when they aren't winning every single game. TCU should have more committed fans and I think that we definitely need to take into consideration that other schools always show support.

  7. I like the spin you took on this piece because as fellow TCU students, we need to be there for our players. We should be just as accountable as they are. You had intensity behind your words and that suited the subject matter very well. It is critical for students to realize that in order for the nation to take our football team seriously, we as fans need to back our team no matter what.

  8. I have been to Alabama tailgates and they are so much fun! Everyone is so passionate about the team, there are so many tents with people cooking, and everyone is so friendly. I agree with you that TCU lacks this measure of passion and one of the reasons is our tailgates have way too many rules and restrictions. Hopefully this can change in the future!

  9. This is such a relevant subject right now especially after the season we have had. I have always wanted to go to an Alabama tailgate, it looks so fun and spirited. Hopefully TCU can step it up next year!

  10. The cool think about this is that you have a true passion and respect for what you are talking about. I agree with you that the fans have been lacking in support for our team...so it is nice to hear you calling out the issues here! Go TCU!
