According to the
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 25% of
college-aged women engage in bingeing and purging to control their weight. As a
female college student at Texas Christian University, I found this statistic
alarming. This blog post is a reminder to all females that society’s physical
expectations are unrealistic and detrimental.
While young girls
learn societal expectations for their appearance, they are not informed that
they are unrealistic. To promote a healthy, happier life for women, girls must
be taught that these expectations are unattainable and degrading. Jennifer
Baumgardner and Amy Richards, wrote in their 2010 book, Manifesta: Young
Women, Feminism, and The Future, that “When our generation begins to take ownership of our own ideas,
and thus our activism, we will have drawn closer to a world of equality.”
Brands featured in
magazines, commercials and billboards hire models and celebrities to advertise
their product. As seen in the “Sky Vodka” advertisement, the brunette model,
clad in black lingerie, lays seductively on a bed. Her tan waist appears tiny
and toned and she is covered in pictures of her body parts. These types of
advertisements are constant reminders to females that a toned frame, flawless
complexion and perky breasts are characteristics of a beautiful woman. The
viewer must be reminded that Photoshop has been preformed on this advertisement
to make the model appear more attractive.
As seen in the “Photoshop Has Gone Too Far” video, a pizza can even be transformed into an attractive image of a female. Photo-shop is preformed on almost every advertisement giving females everywhere these unrealistic expectations. Activating the value of education over physical appearance will promote positive change by reducing sexism and increasing self-esteem.

ReplyDeleteThe image of women has changed a lot! This post explains it perfectly and gives great examples such as the Sky Vodka advertising. The video was very interesting
ReplyDeleteI think this blog is a great piece on raising awareness about eating disorders, and how the media is ruining the way women see themselves. I enjoyed how you incorporated a video as well. That is actually not something I would have thought of doing.
